Top 5 Mistakes Candidates Make on the California Notary Exam

May 10, 2025 · NotaryPrep CA
Many aspiring notaries underestimate the California notary exam. While it is not the most difficult professional exam, it does require focused study. Here are the five most common mistakes candidates make. ## 1. Not Reading the Official Handbook The California Secretary of State publishes a comprehensive Notary Public Handbook. This is the primary source material for the exam. Many candidates rely solely on third-party summaries and miss details that appear on the test. **Tip**: Download the free PDF from the Secretary of State website and read it cover to cover at least once. ## 2. Confusing Acknowledgment and Jurat This is the single most-tested concept on the exam. An **acknowledgment** verifies the signer's identity and that they signed willingly. A **jurat** requires the signer to swear or affirm that the contents of the document are true. Mixing these up will cost you multiple questions. **Tip**: Create a comparison chart. Know when each is required and what the notary must do for each. ## 3. Forgetting Identification Requirements The exam tests specific knowledge of acceptable ID types. California law defines "satisfactory evidence" of identity very precisely. Know the list of acceptable government-issued IDs and the credible witness procedure. ## 4. Ignoring Journal Requirements Notary journal keeping is heavily tested. You must know: - What information must be recorded for each notarization - How to correct journal errors (single line through, initial, never use white-out) - When and how to surrender your journal ## 5. Underestimating Ethics Questions Ethics and prohibited acts make up a significant portion of the exam. Key topics include: - Notarizing for family members (avoid when you have a financial interest) - Never notarizing a blank or incomplete document - Not providing legal advice (this is UPL - unauthorized practice of law) ## The Bottom Line The California notary exam is passable with proper preparation.
